Relaxing in steaming natural springs or a cedar-lined hot tub are an idyllic way to unwind after a day of adventures, so it’s no wonder hot pools in New Zealand are so popular.
This country really knows how to combine rest and relaxation in inspiring settings, and you’ll find these spa-like spaces all over the North and South Islands–especially in Rotorua which is renowned for its thermal waters.
For those exploring spots like Queenstown, Milford Sound and Mount Cook National Park in southern New Zealand, here are five amazing hot pools around the South Island you won’t want to miss.

Onsen Hot Pools, Queenstown
Enjoying a spa sesh at Onsen Hot Pools is one of the top things to do in Queenstown, where an unforgettable relaxation experience combines with breathtaking views.
With about a dozen tubs of varying sizes, one to four people can enjoy a steamy soak from the comfort of their private room. This tranquil spot is nestled into the slopes in Arthur’s Point about 15 minutes from downtown, with panoramic views of The Remarkable Mountains, Queenstown Hill, Cecil Peak and Shotover River from every pool

The Original Onsen pools have wooden side walls and a retractable roof to switch from an indoor to an outdoor experience at the push of a button, while the Oval Onsen tubs are more enclosed with a private shower and a fourth wall of floor-to-ceiling retractable windows.
Pools are filled with pure water from the surrounding mountains and heated to 38.3° degrees, and the experience includes a complimentary drink and snack.
Globe Guide tip: For the best photo-ops and unobstructed views, book one of the round Original Onsens instead of an oval one.

Guests can book in for just the tub, or upgrade to a post-soak face or body treatment at the day spa. When I went to reserve a few weeks out, the only option left was for the Serenity Soak package which includes 45 minutes in an oval tub with a drink and snack, a one hour treatment and a post-service tea session. Well let me tell you, was that ever money well spent!
I opted for the Aotearoa Escape which is a 30 minute hydrating back scrub with Rotorua Thermal Mud and Manuka Honey Body Butter, followed by a relaxing 30 minute facial. The treatment room also had awe-inspiring views, the therapist was incredible (one of the best massages I’ve ever had) and my skin was absolutely glowing after. Click here to book
Good to know:
- There’s a complimentary shuttle service between the Onsen Hot Pools and downtown Queenstown which can be confirmed during booking.
- The Onsen Hot Pools typically book up well in advance–especially during high season–so reserve as soon as possible.

Driftaway, Queenstown
Another great option for hot pools in Queenstown are the hot tubs at Driftaway Queenstown, which is less about the spa experience and more about fun and connection.
This fabulous holiday park is on the shores of Lake Wakatipu in the Frankton Arm, and along with camping spots and self-contained villas it has a handful of private hot tub rooms overlooking the water.

Two to four guests are welcome to book a one hour session, and each room has a washroom, space for hanging robes and towels, and a retractable window that fully opens to enjoy views of the lake and mountains.
Different than jacuzzis, these tubs are designed for soaking so they don’t have powerful jets and bubbles. Instead, the idea is to kick back and relax in a serene setting.
Good to know:
- Minimum of two people are required for each booking
- Pools are open to the public; guests staying at Driftaway Queenstown enjoy a 50 per cent discount

Tekapo Springs, Lake Tekapo
As if stargazing while surrounded by mountains, a pristine lake and the crisp night air wasn’t magical enough, imagine doing it while floating weightlessly in a hot pool.
You can do just that at Tekapo Springs along Lake Tekapo, which hosts three hot pools, a plunge pool, steam, sauna and day spa which uses organic, New Zealand-made products.

The complex has been a mainstay in the community since 2008, expanding to add a kids aqua play area with cooler pools and an 18 hole mini golf course, cafe, bar, snow tube park and skating rinks.

Found at the base of Mount John in the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve (the largest in the Southern Hemisphere), Tekapo Star Gazing is New Zealand’s only guided hot pools and star gazing experience.
The first half of the 90 minute tour combines astronomy and storytelling, focusing on the planets, galaxies and stars along with the legends and mythology of celestial objects. Then, guests enjoy exclusive use of the Tekapo hot springs after dark, lying on a floating hammock while admiring the night sky. Click here to book

Hot Tubs Ōmarama, Ōmarama
Those who find themselves road tripping around the South Island may find themselves in the town of Ōmarama, a spot which one might normally pass right through were it not for their memorable hot pools.
The Mackenzie Basin and Waitaki country scenery provides the backdrop for these private tubs, which are filled with fresh mountain water and guests can adjust the temperature themselves by adding cool tap water or turning up the heat from the natural wood fire.
Holding up to eight people at a time (including children), there are smooth stainless steel pools as well as tubs fashioned from sustainably harvested Canadian Western Red Cedar.

Book in for a 90 minute session in one of the Ōmarama hot pools, or add on a sauna experience and start by warming up inside before heading out to enjoy the mountain views and starry night skies.
Good to know:
- Ōmarama is two hours from Queenstown and just an hour from Mt Cook National Park, making these New Zealand hot pools a great pit stop after a day of skiing or hiking.
- Each tub has a private changing room. Drinking water and towels are also provided.
- Hot Tubs Ōmarama offers an accessible tub, with a sloping ramp and rail up to the edge of the tub for easier access.
Tukare Lookout, Te Anau
Some of New Zealand’s best scenery is found in Fiordland National Park–home to Milford Sound–and the gateway is the lakefront town of Te Anau which is where you’ll find Tukare Lookout.
This completely private villa features a king size bed, fully-equipped kitchen, spa-like bathroom, seating area and an outdoor patio complete with–you guessed it–a large outdoor bath that fits two people.

There’s absolutely no one around, which means the ultimate soak session anytime of day with jaw-dropping views of Lake Te Anau, its pristine islets and surrounding peaks.
If you’re lucky you’ll enjoy a spectacular sunset capped off with a night of stargazing, making this one of the best hot pools in New Zealand. Click here to book
