When it comes to cozy mountain stays, Buffalo Mountain Lodge in Banff has it all: epic vistas, spacious suites complete with wood-burning stone fireplaces, creative cocktails for apres ski, and arguably one of the best outdoor hot tubs in the Bow Valley.

Situated on the top of Tunnel Mountain, the location is perfect for those wanting to feel like they’re at a serene retreat away from the bustle of downtown Banff, yet still only a few minute’s drive or quick walk from the shopping and restaurants in town.
There’s a ski hill so close you can actually see the runs, and attractions like hiking trails, lookout points, the Banff Gondola, Cave and Basin National Historic Site and Banff Upper Hot Springs are less than 15 minutes away. A bus stop connecting them is conveniently right across the street, which makes it a breeze to explore the park sans car.

The lodge is surrounded by nine acres of towering pine, fir and spruce trees, and enjoying a tranquil morning walk around the property when it’s dusted with snow is a perfect way to start a day in the Rocky Mountains.

Rooms at Buffalo Mountain Lodge
Buffalo Mountain Lodge does a great job of appealing to all types of travellers, whether you’re visiting for a couple’s getaway, a friend’s ski trip or a quick family vacation like we were.
There are over a hundred guest rooms with one king or two queen beds, and luxe L’Occitane amenties. Configurations include studios with kitchenettes, suites with a separate living area, and the O’Connor House with three bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and a chef’s kitchen sprawling over 2500 square feet. Some also feature patios and balconies.

Since we were travelling with our four-month-old daughter, we opted for a Buffalo Suite so she could sleep in the bedroom while we hung out in the separate living room at night.
The space has a renovated bathroom, small dining table, fireplace and a fully-equipped kitchen space which is ultra convenient for families. Pack n plays are also available upon request for little ones.
Globe Guide note: Rooms are not equipped with air conditioning, so keep this in mind if visiting during the summer months.

Buffalo Mountain Lodge has a mix of recently renovated suites along with Premier and Premier Plus rooms: the latter have more of the classic cabin vibe like high, vaulted pine ceilings, heated slate floors and claw foot bathtubs, so if you’re planning a romantic weekend I’d definitely recommend one of these.
Pet-friendly rooms and ADA approved rooms are also available. Book on Expedia or with Booking.com

Dining at The Prow
I’ve been lucky enough to visit CRMR properties like Emerald Lake Lodge a few other times over the years, and one thing that’s consistently great is the dining.
The Prow restaurant and bar is in the main lodge, serving up breakfast, lunch and dinner, shareables like overflowing charcuterie boards, as well as a separate menu for kids. The menu is crafted to highlight the unique flavours found in the Bow Valley. While of course vegetarian options are offered, there’s a big emphasis on game meats like smoked bison tartare, bison and elk meatballs drenched in a spicy marinara sauce, short rib and a succulent “AAA” beef ribeye–yes, we tried them all!
Globe Guide tip: As a self-proclaimed poutine connoisseur, I’m here to tell you: don’t sleep on the chicken confit poutine, it’s fab!

The Prow also has ‘Pasta Mondays’, offering handcrafted pasta dishes at half price (I’d definitely recommend you order the bison bolognese rotini). The special includes wine pairings for only $6 per glass, $2 Italian sodas and a ‘build your own negroni’ feature.

Cozy up to the swish bar at the end of a day of adventures for some happy hour bevvies from their robust signature cocktail list: we were partial to the Instagram-worthy Postmark Sour and the smoky old fashioneds.

Amenities at Buffalo Mountain Lodge
Buffalo Mountain Lodge has lots of free parking right in front of each building, and a few electric vehicle chargers.
There’s a gym to help work off all that delicious food, outdoor fire pits, and an ultra-cozy hangout area in the inviting lobby area featuring a gorgeous antler chandelier. Board games are also available to borrow.

My absolute favourite thing about staying here is putting on a plush robe and heading to the large outdoor hot tub for an evening soak.
Complete with a gas fireplace and seating area, it’s absolutely dreamy–especially in the winter months when the steam swirls up into the crisp mountain air, making a stay at Buffalo Mountain Lodge the ultimate escape.
