New Zealand

Geothermal wonders, dramatic fjords and stunning hikes await in New Zealand, making this a paradise for outdoor adventurers.

There doesn't seem to be a bad view anywhere you go in New Zealand, whether it's from a roadside pullout along Lake Wakatipu, looking down at a tapestry of vineyards in the Marlborough wine region, while cruising through the fjords in Milford Sound or walking on the Fox Glacier.

Start off your New Zealand itinerary in the capital Auckland on the North Island and spend a few days exploring the city, relaxing on the surrounding beaches and taking the ferry over to Waiheke Island which is like a mix of Hawaii and Napa Valley. A few hours south is Hobbiton, a popular tourist draw as a filming location for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. Head over to the nearby Rotorua region, renowned for its rich Māori culture, world-class spas and wellness experiences.

The South Island is the ultimate road trip destination. Most people start off in Queenstown for high-octane adventures like jet boat rides, paragliding and helicopter tours, ending the day with a soak in one of these amazing hot pools. There are also many scenic roadways including the Crown Range Road over to Wanaka, and the lakefront drive to Glenorchy.

If time allows, head up to Mt Cook National Park for unbelievable scenery and hikes for all fitness levels including the family-friendly Hooker Valley Track. An absolute must-do is visiting Milford Sound in Fiordland, best explored on a scenic cruise (or an overnight trip if you're lucky enough to secure a spot). The journey into that national park is half the fun thanks to spectacular roadside pullouts, and the Te Anau glowworm caves hold one of New Zealand's most memorable natural phenomenons.
