A Highlands hideaway: The Lanrick luxury treehouses in Scotland

A Highlands hideaway: The Lanrick luxury treehouses in Scotland

Logs crackled in the wood-burning fireplace, the embers casting a soft glow over the living room where I sat curled up on a cozy, oversize couch.

Looking through the windows, all I could see was a sea of green, as a canopy of leafy trees enveloped our cabin. It was like nature had made its way in, as the entire room was paneled with rustic wood and a couple of tree trunks even snaked their way up through the floor and out the rafters.

These treehouses in Scotland were glamping at its finest: a woodland escape in the heart of the Highlands.

The Treehouses at Lanrick are nestled in the woods in Perthshire just outside Doune, home to the famed Doune Castle on the edge of Trossachs National Park.

Only an hour’s drive from top sites like Edinburgh, Glasgow and Loch Lomond, the Lanrick treehouses are prime for a romantic getaway or weekend break, and among the best when it comes to luxury glamping in Scotland.

A quiet road winds through the idyllic property, leading to five eco-friendly houses perched near the banks of the River Teith shrouded in thick forest.

These Scotland treehouses were created by husband and wife team Simon and Louisa Dickson on the same beloved property where Simon grew up, which has been in his family since 1904.

The couple also runs The Treehouses at Leckie just 20 minutes south of Lanrick, where four glamping sites overlook the magnificent Gargunnock Hills.

The treehouse experience

A quick note: the cabins here aren’t technically treehouses in that they’re not suspended to the tree trunks, and instead were built to be elevated among the shrubbery.

It’s no matter though: you’ll still experience a feeling of seclusion and peaceful quiet, whether it’s listening to birds chirp while soaking in the outdoor tub or watching lively red squirrels scurry around outside your window while enjoying a morning coffee.

We stayed in ‘Nuthatch’, which has a living room (with pull-out sofa bed), fully-equipped kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom with sliding doors leading out to a huge balcony complete with a copper soaker tub.

Outdoor patios boast a dining area and barbecue for the self-catering types; guests can either drive into Doune (about 10 minutes) for meals, bring their own food or pre-order ready-made meals that will be waiting in the kitchen upon arrival.

Conservation is a major focus here: the treehouses were constructed from timber grown right on property, and each one features decor like hand-crafted tables and upcycled furniture.

While each one can accommodate about four people between the bedroom and sofa bed, the Flycatcher and Willow Warbler cabins are ideal for groups or larger families as a rope bridge connects the two.

Amenities at The Treehouses at Lanrick

While one could be content simply relaxing inside their treehouse the whole stay (in-room massages are available, too), there’s also plenty to explore around the property.

Forested walking trails lead down to the river and fly-fishing holes, there are ruins, picnic sites, birding opportunities and even an in-ground sauna.

Lanrick’s off-grid location lends itself to getting back to nature, while also being a convenient base for hiking, cycling and canoeing in Trossachs National Park, golfing at the world-renowned Gleneagles and Loch Lomond golf courses, visiting castles and sampling sips at Deanston Distillery which are all nearby.
